It’s definitely winter out there now! The freezing temperatures, frosted windshields, and even the few flurries we’ve seen all point to this fact (as well as the calendar but who watches those?) With the winter comes some of our favorite, but also most harmful, foods and drinks. With sugary drinks like eggnog and hot coco and delicious holidays cookies and pies everything this time of year is out to get your teeth. Luckily there are a few good precautions you can take to ensure a nice healthy mouth this winter
1: Eat a healthy Breakfast
Breakfast is not the time for pastries and pies! They may be convenient and delicious but by starting the day off right you can help to kickstart your metabolism, increase saliva production, and feel energized for the day. Eat a nice hearty breakfast of fresh fruits, eggs, bacon, yogurt, oatmeal or non-sugary cereals. Your teeth will thank you by not starting off their day covered in sugar.
2: Dry Your Toothbrush
With the amount of traveling that goes on during the holidays it gets easy to lose track of your toothbrush. Let it air dry after each use or the bacteria on it will begin to multiply rapidly. Remember, the bacteria in your mouth like dark, warm, moist environments. This means that throwing your toothbrush back into your suitcase might actually promote bacteria production, which will make your next brushing a bit less helpful than you would like it to.
3: Drink a Lot of Water
Water is a wonderful thing. Not only does it help you to remain slive, but it creates a mini shower for your teeth when you drink it. By drinking water you flush a good amount of sugar and bacteria from your mouth. This helps to keep your teeth nice and healthy and reduce the potential for gingivitis.
4: Make Healthy Eating Choices
Maybe seconds or thirds on desert aren’t really necessary. Perhaps the eggnog is best left in the bowl. It’s even possible that Santa’s diet of milk and cookies was replaced by milk and veggies. There’s no better way to help your mouth this year than there is to simply make good choices when it comes to the foods you eat. By choosing to eat better you’re choosing not only to help your mouth, but to help your whole body this winter.
