Hygiene

Dental Implants | Oral Surgery | Gum Disease Treatment | Hartford We all know it is imperative to maintain your gums and keep teeth healthy. Remember to brush your teeth twice a day. Choose a toothpaste and mouthwash containing fluoride. Floss daily to minimize the build up of plaque on the teeth and gums. For best results, rinse with a fluoride mouthwash before flossing. Flossing will help to work in the fluoride between the teeth. Choose a toothbrush with soft bristles. Replace it regularly every few months so no bacteria can steadily grow in on the bristles, brush your tongue and roof of the mouth to freshen your breath.

Cleanings

You should have your teeth cleaned as often as your hygienist and dentist recommend. At the very minimum we recommend to have your teeth cleaned at least twice a year. That applies if your gums are heathly and you follow a sound oral hygien protocol. We suggest a more frequent approach if you have any signs of gum or bone disease whereby we may suggest to see you up to four times a year. Remember that regardless of cleanings, we strongly suggest everyone visit their dentist twice a year to be checked out for oral cancer and signs of other diseases whose symptoms first appear in the mouth.

Fluoride

Dental Implants | Oral Surgery | Gum Disease Treatment | Hartford Fluoride has been a major factor in the decline and severity of dental caries and tooth decay in the United States. When used appropriately, fluoride is both safe and effective in preventing and controlling tooth decay. Today most of United States residents are likely to be exposed to some degree of fluoride which is readily available from multiple sources for in most public communities public drinking supplies are supplemented with sodium fluoride because the practice is acknowledged as safe and effective in fighting the cavities.

Soft Tissue Management

It is a personalized treatment plan to eliminate infection of the gums and root surfaces. Remember that periodontal disease is an infectious and inflammatory disease that results from bacteria collecting on the tooth surface above and below the gum line which destroys both gum tissues and bone. Remember, the bottom line is that greatest cause of adult tooth loss is gum disease.

Gum Treatment

Gum diseases are treated in a variety of ways depending on the stage of disease, your response to earlier treatments and your overall health. Treatment options may range from simple cleanings to nonsurgical therapies that control bacterial growth to surgery to extensive and involved restoration of supportive tissues.

Sealants for both children and adults

Sealants are thin, plastic coatings painted on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth.  They have been around for a long time!  Research by NIDR and others led to the development of sealants in the early 1960's. Getting sealants put on is simple and painless. They are painted on as liquid and quickly harden to form a shield over the tooth. In general, sealants can last up to 10 years but they need to be checked at regular dental check-ups to make sure they are not chipped or worn away.  The dentist can repair sealants by adding more sealant material at any age.

Nutrition counseling

Dental Implants | Oral Surgery | Gum Disease Treatment | Hartford The right diet and nutrition play an integral part in ensuring strong teeth and healthy gums. Sugar, natural or processed, is your teeth's deadliest enemy and is the prime cause of tooth decay. Retentive sticky foods (such as raisins, caramels, toffees, slowly dissolving hard candies, etc.) that are not quickly diluted by saliva also pose a major risk in the formation of dental cavities. Even apparently harmless wafers/chips are retained on the tooth for a long period of time & eventually broken down into carbohydrates & sugars leading to decay.

Many inter-related factors must be considered when the growth and development of children is being evaluated in respect to their oral health. Children should be given carbohydrates in their natural forms (as far as possible). They should be encouraged to eat hard fruits in whole instead of juices. This helps cleanse and stimulate teeth. Sticky/soft foods like white bread, pastries, aerated drinks, doughnuts, sweet rolls and processed cereals, one of the biggest causes of tooth decay, should be avoided. Beverages like  buttermilk and home-made squashes should be encouraged.

Restorative Dentistry

Periodontics

Dental Implants | Oral Surgery | Gum Disease Treatment | Hartford Is the prevention and treatment of gum disease. Treatment options may range from simple cleanings to nonsurgical therapies that control bacterial growth to surgery to extensive and involved restoration of supportive tissues. Periodontal or gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is a leading cause of tooth loss in American adults. It has also been linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other health problems.

Plaque is the sticky film of bacteria that is brushed and flossed away with proper oral care. When left on the teeth, plaque produces toxins that attack below the gum line in the sulcus, a shallow v-shaped crevice between the tooth and gums. This causes the bond between teeth and gums to break down. In the early stage of gum disease (gingivitis), gums may become red and swollen and bleed easily. In the more advanced stage (periodontal disease), teeth can loosen and fall out.

Good oral hygiene and regular dental examinations are essential in the prevention and early detection of gum disease – especially since you can have it without experiencing any warning signs.

Removable Prosthodontics

Dental Implants | Oral Surgery | Gum Disease Treatment | Hartford Injury, disease, congenital defects, joint and sleep disorders, neglect, and years of day-to-day wear can all cause significant damage and require the complete or partial removal of our teeth. Prosthodontics is a subspecialty of dentistry that focuses on the restoration and replacement of missing or damaged teeth and other oral tissues to maintain health, function and aesthetics. Stained, chipped, worn, broken or missing teeth can be restored to their natural appearance so you can continue to enjoy a beautiful smile. Replacements include crowns, bridges, veneers, inlays, dental implants, and complete and removable partial dentures.

For those who for various medical or economical reasons can not afford the implant or crown and bridge supported prosthetics, full and partial dentures remain a viable alternative that we would be happy to discuss with you. The difference between the two is that a full denture replaces all of the missing teeth while a partial denture or a "removable bridge" replaces one or more missing teeth but there must be teeth remaining for the partial plate to attach to. The major concept of a partial denture is that while it is removable it does prevent other teeth from shifting preserving your remaining teeth and smile.

Endodontics - Root Canal Treatment

Dental Implants | Oral Surgery | Gum Disease Treatment | Hartford If your tooth's nerve chamber becomes infected by decay, or damaged by trauma, root canal treatment is often the only way to save your tooth.

Deep tooth decay or other injury can cause damage to or infection of the tooth pulp. In a root canal or endodontic treatment, the dentist removes the damaged or infected pulp and replaces it with a special filler which helps maintain the remaining tooth structure.

Some indications of the need for root canal treatment may be:

  • Spontaneous pain or throbbing while biting.
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold foods.
  • Severe decay or an injury that creates an abscess (infection) in the bone.

Implant Placement and Restoration

Dental implants can be an effective method to replace one tooth or several teeth. Each implant consists of a metal anchor that is inserted into the jawbone, and a protruding post, which is outfitted with an artificial tooth. Implants can also support a bridge, replace a partial denture or secure a fixed denture. The process requires surgery and may take up to a year to complete.
