Xerostomia. While you try to pronounce that we’ll tell you a little bit about this condition that plagues many people. The street name for this disease is “dry mouth” (much less scary sounding, right?) and it’s symptoms include a persistently dry feeling mouth. Dry mouth is  caused by a variety of external stimuli such as smoking, alcohol or drug use, or dehydrations, but can also be a symptom or side effect of diseases, treatments and medications.

More Than an Annoyance

Dry mouth is more than an irritating side effect; it can affect the overall health of your mouth. Part of saliva’s job in your mouth is to regulate the bacteria that. These bacteria can get out of control if they and the food particles they feed on aren’t taken care of, and that’s what your saliva does without you even knowing it. Saliva acts as a sort of bath for your mouth, washing away food particles naturally and keeping your teeth nice and healthy.

How to Deal With it

There are several things you can do to deal with Xerostomia. If you know the exact cause or trigger the easiest way to combat Xerostomia would be to stop doing that thing, such as drugs, smoking, drinking, etc. Obviously there are times when you won’t be able to up and stop, such as cases of addiction and medications. If you’re trying to fight an addiction or have a medication you can’t cut back on dosage there are a few things you can do.

  1. Chew sugar-free gum – This stimulates the flow of saliva in the mouth. Sucking on sugar-free hard candies also has the same effect. Be careful, however, as the ingredient xylitol has been known to cause massive diarrhea and cramps if consumed in large amounts. Limit your intake!
  2. Limit caffeine intake – Caffeine can make your mouth drier, simple as that.
  3. Drink water – Regularly. You’ll have to use the bathroom a bit more, but it’s worth it.
  4. Try over-the-counter remedies – There are several over the counter saliva substitutes out there. Find some containing xylitol or hydroxyethyl cellulose.
  5. Use mouthwash designed to fight dry mouth – There are several out there, try to find one that contains xylitol.
  6. Breathe through your nose – Not your mouth
  7. Use a humidifier at night

If you frequently have dry mouth, take the following precautions:

  1. Limit sugary foods – Without saliva to protect your teeth from sugar, you are more prone to cavities
  2. Brush with a  floured toothpaste – This will help strengthen the teeth more than other toothpastes. Ask your dentist if a prescription brand might benefit you
  3. Use a floured mouthwash For the same reason as above
  4. Have regularly scheduled dentist appointments – You’re not getting off the hook that easy. Twice a year like everyone else! If you have dry mouth you’re more susceptible to oral problems such as cavities and gingivitis so make sure you in the chair regularly.
