Keep it Fresh

Most bad breath comes from a dry mouth. Some people experience a chronic dry mouth for which there are preventative measures that can be taken (we actually have a whole blog about this, click here to learn more). For everyone else, these 4 tips will help you to have fresh breath at the ready!


1. Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day and Floss Daily

If you’re a regular reader of our blog you know we say this a lot, probably in 70% of our blogs. The reason we say it so much is because it is so important to any sort of oral health you expect to have. Bad breath happens when bacteria in your mouth feeds on foods and sugars that are left over from meals, snacks, ect. By brushing and flossing you can eliminate a lot of this left over food leaving nothing for the bacteria to feast on and giving you fresher breath.

2. Drink Plenty of Water

Hydration has a lot of influence over your body. The most important reason to drink water is, of course, to stay alive, but orally water serves a few more purposes. Drinking water with and after meals is like a mini shower for your mouth, washing away food particles that might otherwise sit in your mouth. One trick I use is to swish the water around in my mouth after a meal or after a sugary snack to disturb and dislodge any food that might be taking residence inside your mouth.

3. Have a Balanced Diet

The food you eat affects your breath! With this exciting revelation it should come as no surprise that healthier foods will (usually) give you better smelling breath than unhealthy foods. Fruits high in vitamin C like melons and citrusy fruits will help kill germs, and foods high in fiber like celery and apples will help to remove the food that becomes wedged in your teeth. Sugary foods should of course be limited and followed by a nice swig of water, but don’t feel guilty about them!

4. Chew Sugar Free Gum

Specifically, you should try to chew gum with a Xylitol base. Those bacteria we talked about earlier love sugar, and xylitol is a suger alternative that the bacteria can’t break down. See where we’re going with this? No bad breath, more saliva to wash away microscopic bits of food, and the minty freshness of gum. What’s not to love?
