Invisalign is a modern approach to straightening teeth. For kids and adults alike, traditional metal braces can be bulky and cumbersome. Now this is not to say metal braces are old hat and should be forgotten, because they still work well and offer several advantages, but this is 2015, and the future demands change.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a modern day, clear aligner that gently shifts your teeth into place over time. There are no metal brackets and no wires to tighten. Every person using Invisalign will have a custom set of aligners created for them and only them. That’s right, you get a custom set specifically for your mouth, with movement calculations made by your dentist or orthodontist.
Do you want to know the best past about this whole process? No on will even know you’re straightening your teeth!
How Does It Work?
The process starts with a chat with your dental provider or orthodontist. Your doctor will talk you through the steps and determine if Invisalign is the right choice for you. This is also the time to get any information you need, such as pricing, insurance coverage, ect.
Once you and your doctor have a defined plan he will take X-rays, pictures, and impressions of your teeth which Invisalign will use to create a 3-d image of your mouth. With these images your doctor is able to map out an exact treatment plan, and movement plan, for each tooth. From these plans Invisalign creates a series of custom made, clear aligners. These aligners are smooth, comfortable, BPA-free plastic that won’t interfere with your everyday life. They don’t irritate your cheeks or gums like traditional braces do either.
Wear these custom aligners every day for two weeks, except when eating, brushing, and flossing your teeth and your teeth will begin to gradually shift into place. You should aim for 20-22 hours per day of wear time (yes this means while sleeping!). Since they’re practically invisible, on one will even notice you have them on!
At the end of the second week you will begin wearing a new aligner to continue to the movement of your teeth. This allows the process to continue in one fluid motion. You should have a check-up with your doctor every 6-8 weeks to check on the progress. At every stage you’ll be able to see how far your teeth have come and how great your smile is looking!
